Fierce Competition Fuels Eastern D1 Regional PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 March 2010 20:27

From Friday, March 5th to Saturday March 6th, the Atlanta teams, the Tigers and the Synergy, hosted the South Eastern Regional Tournament for 2010.  In pool play, each team played all of the other teams, which brought back some old rivalries, like the one between the Tampa Thunder and the Tampa Bay Crossfire.  Throughout all but one of the games, the Synergy clearly dominated in goals scored, while the opposing teams couldn't seem to get past the Synergy defense to score.  The Tidewater Piranahs were, in fact, the only team to score against the Synergy, but it still wasn't enough to win the game.  The Synergy scored seven goals, and the Piranhas scored twice on the Synergy.

On Saturday, when the Atlanta Tigers, Tampa Thunder, and Tampa Bay Crossfire all had the same number of points in pool play, the overall point differential put the Atlanta Tigers into the championship game against the Atlanta Synergy.  The earlier tie game between  between the Tampa Thunder and the Tampa Bay Crossfire put both of those teams in the competition for third place.  With only the top 3 teams moving on to nationals, all teams put everything on the line.  .  In the third Place game, neither team scored during regulation play.  The game went into overtime, and neither team scored then either.  Finally, the game got down to a penalty-kick "sudden death" shootout, and each team made it through the first rotation of shots, where each player making their shot into the goal.  On the second rotation however, one of the Crossfire players missed the kick by inches (bouncing out of the goal off of the post), and the Tampa Thunder ultimately won the hard-fought battle for third place.

In the championship game, the Atlanta Tigers and the Atlanta Synergy both brought it all to the court, with the ball spending most of the game in the center of the court.  However, the Synergy took advantage of some breakaway opportunities, moving the ball into the Tigers end of the field.  Once there, they wore down the Tiger defense and eventually scored three goals on the Tigers.  The Tigers did their best to make up the difference, but the final score was 3-0, Syngery. The Atlanta Synergy came away with first place, with the Atlanta Tigers taking second, the Tampa Thunder taking third, the Tampa Bay Crossfire taking fourth, and the Tidewater Piranhas taking fifth.

The tournament was one of the best ever, and it truly showed of the South Eastern region’s speed, determination, and true grit.  The fierce competition and incredibly close point spreads also displayed just how much all of the teams worked to get there, and how well paired this southeast region is.
